A Life-Changing Career

Position Summary: Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN is currently seeking a Research Fellow for the Biomarker Discovery Program within the Center for Individualized Medicine. Qualified individuals will have skills in molecular biology, and have demonstrated the potential for research.

The Biomarker Discovery Program, just like clinical care at Mayo Clinic, is a multidisciplinary team that includes oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, molecular biologists, bioengineers, bioinformaticians and others. By combining expertise, the program takes a clinical question and answers it through a four-phase approach: Discovery, experimental validation, preclinical validation and clinical validation. The program aims to solve clinical dilemmas like this across a spectrum of diseases, including lung cancer, prostate cancer, melanoma and more. The molecular biology research fellow will develop nucleic acid methods and assays, implement and apply molecular biology methodology to clinical research studies, and participate in the team science approach within the program and with clinical collaborators.

Candidate will be responsible for hands on optimization of molecular biology techniques, such as liquid biopsy design to monitor cfDNA/ctDNA levels in patient samples by Mate Pair Next Generation Sequencing and analysis. Responsibilities will include bench work, for example setup and processing of cfDNA, and hands on leadership for the program’s implementation of newly developed methods.   The candidate will work directly with the Laboratory Directors to analyze the data, do relevant literature review and correlation, and generate the appropriate reports. The ideal candidate will have molecular biology/ molecular genomic and/or cancer biology experience, with familiarity in techniques, bioinformatics analysis of NGS results, and development of qPCR assays. This position requires self-motivation, attention to detail, the ability to work independently and as a team member. Candidates must possess excellent communication skills with all levels of staff, internal and external to the laboratory. Direct, firsthand laboratory experience with evaluation, optimization, and troubleshooting of molecular biology techniques for DNA isolation and amplification is desirable.
