Ministry of Research, Innovation and Science
Ontario’s Ministry of Research, Innovation and Science supports world-class research, commercialization and innovation taking place across Ontario through a range of programs and services. To accelerate science in Ontario and make the province a top destination for global research talent, Ontario is looking to recruit its first Chief Scientist.
Ontario’s Chief Scientist will promote science in government and education, help the government make better policy decisions that are informed by science, advise the government on how to support future research and innovation projects, promote Ontario as a hub for research across Canada and the world by attracting top research talent, and will help define the best science and strategy for the province.
With a government-wide mandate, Ontario’s Chief Scientist reports to the Minister of Research, Innovation and Science and advises the Premier as necessary.
The Chief Scientist will provide advice on matters requiring scientific input, including the aging population, AI, disruptive technologies, climate change and others.
The Chief Scientist will be responsible for ensuring that the Ontario government has the scientific infrastructure it needs to support robust policy and governance, and will work with various government ministries, Ontario’s research community and other stakeholders to set and execute a bold vision for advancing science in Ontario.

Further, the new Chief Scientist will be an exceptional communicator, able to interpret both science and policy and lucidly translate complex science into plain language when speaking directly to media, policy makers and the public. With demonstrated skills in scientific research and the evaluation of scientific/research programs, projects and publications, the preferred candidate maintains a dynamic network of scientific, industry and academic partners and establishes trust and confidence with policy makers, public media and scientists across the province.
