Working with CHS faculty, senior executives, external collaborators or independently, the Senior Health Services Researcher will identify opportunities to use research, analysis and evaluation methods to design and implement studies that will inform transformative healthcare delivery and improved patient outcomes.  The Senior Health Services Researcher will complete studies, apply for external funding and disseminate and publish study results. This position requires regular and frequent exercise of independent judgement and decision-making in sensitive situations that impact the mission of CHS. This role requires strong project management and communications skills, frequent exercise of independent judgment in sensitive situations, and interaction with diverse groups across Carolinas HealthCare System. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Specific focus areas for the department and position currently include: Research and evaluation needs assessment:  Directing and executing multiple, concurrent projects independent of or with little supervision, the Senior Health Services Researcher:
    Evaluates client needs or requests for research support to understand and document all practical, methodological and technical aspects of the work.Leads the ongoing interface with stakeholders to develop collaborative and appropriate research and evaluation studiesUnderstands and manages multiple competing priorities across client interactions, skillfully balancing importance and urgency against resource availability for all components of the project Developing solutions:  Directing and executing multiple, concurrent projects independent of or with little supervision, the Senior Health Services Researcher:Designs methodologically sound studies to evaluate specific health care interventions, processes or programs and to deliver insights and strategic opportunities to improve the quality, patient experience and cost of healthcare using qualitative and/or survey methodsCreates timelines for project management with little or no assistanceDevelops complete study protocols, including documents for IRB oversightEnsures successful completion of assigned projects on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with CHS standards, ethics and research regulationsPerforms thorough analyses of outcomes, methods, and processes, utilizing primary and secondary data sources, and published literatureManipulates, combines, and refines data to produce information suitable for analysisCreates graphics for data and concept visualization and information displayPublishes study results in peer-reviewed journalsDisseminates results through publication and presentation to internal and external stakeholdersExpertly defines problems and translates business/research questions into analytical questions and translates analytical results into business/research solutionsPrepares grants and research proposalsAssists with ad hoc requests or projectsAdheres to CHS and national research and compliance regulations Communication and customer service:  As an advocate for research and evaluation and CORE, the Senior Health Services Researcher:Provides excellent customer service following CHS Core Values of Caring, Commitment, Integrity and Teamwork.Translates advanced methodologies and complex results for non-technical audiencesSynthesizes insights and documents work by developing clear and concise presentations and reportsDemonstrates good listening skills with the ability to receive and provide constructive feedback when appropriateFinds innovative ways to overcome roadblocks and get things doneEducates clients, colleagues and team members on research and evaluation concepts and on analytical, computational and/or qualitative methodologiesGuides customers through known and potential data issues, taking into consideration all data collection inconsistencies and inaccuracies in source systems.Conducts effective meetings with clients, including senior leaders (SVP, EVP, physicians). Leadership Skills and Education: Support the development of a robust qualitative research program to support researchers within CORE and other Carolinas HealthCare System departments. Conducts research without direct supervision.Provide consultation and training in qualitative research methodsMentor junior researchers Design and implement qualitative research studies including the creation of discussion guides and screening tools in collaboration with project teams.Develop participant recruitment plans for focus groups and interviewsModerate groups, interviews, ethnography studies and online forumsManage the analysis, interpretation and reporting of qualitative research projectsWrites reports suitable for both technical and non-technical audiences to communicate the research and evaluation results.Writes manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.Assist with writing grant proposals and scientific articlesOther tasks as assigned

Education, Experience and Certifications
Masters Degree in Health Policy, Survey Research, Epidemiology, Sociology, or other health-related research field required. 5 years professional experience in public health or healthcare related field required. Experience working in observational research and utilizing computers and databases to conduct analyses and interpretation of evaluation and outcome studies required.
